Why "cotton-rich" and "cotton feel" usually mean polyester
The words on a hang-tag are marketing, not a fabric guarantee. "Cotton feel", "cotton touch" and "cotton blend" all tell you the same thing: the trouser is not 100% cotton. "Cotton-rich" has a loose meaning too — it can be just over half cotton and still leave enough polyester in the weave to trap heat and sweat.
This matters most in a Pakistani summer. Polyester is plastic spun into thread; it holds heat against the skin and does not let sweat escape. That is exactly what turns a hot day into prickly heat and chafing. If breathability is why you want cotton in the first place, a blend quietly undoes the reason you bought it. Read the label first — what the percentages mean
Every genuine garment carries a fibre-composition label, usually stitched into the inside waistband or a side seam. This is the number that counts, not the front hang-tag. Look for the exact percentages and read them plainly:
- 100% Cotton — the real thing; fully breathable, absorbs sweat, softens with wear.
- 95% Cotton, 5% Elastane (or Spandex) — still breathable; the small stretch is fine and common in a good trouser.
- Cotton / Polyester blends (60/40, 65/35, etc.) — part synthetic; the more polyester, the less it breathes.
- "Poly-viscose", "PC", "cotton feel", no percentage at all — treat as synthetic until proven otherwise.
Two quick tests you can do at home
Labels can be wrong or missing, so it helps to check the cloth itself. These two tests take a minute and need nothing special.
The water-drop test is the easiest. Put a single drop of water on the fabric and watch. Pure cotton drinks the drop in and leaves a spreading damp patch within a few seconds, because the fibre absorbs moisture. Polyester repels it — the drop beads up and sits on the surface, or rolls off. That same behaviour is what your sweat will do on a hot day.
The feel-and-crush test is the second. Real cotton feels dry and slightly matte, and when you scrunch a handful in your fist it holds soft creases when you let go. Polyester feels smoother, faintly slippery or cool-plasticky, and springs back almost crease-free — that wrinkle-resistance is the giveaway. There is also a burn test that textile people use (cotton smells like burning paper and leaves soft ash; polyester melts into a hard bead), but it involves an open flame, so only do it on a spare thread and away from anything that can catch.
What real cotton costs — and why the very cheap "cotton" isn't
Cotton costs more to grow, spin and finish than polyester, so genuine cotton trousers sit at a fair mid-range price, not rock-bottom. If a "cotton" trouser is priced far below everything around it, that low price is usually paying for polyester content, a thin loose weave, or fabric that was never pre-shrunk and will change size in the first wash.
