The number is the length, not the waist, so it follows your child's height. As a starting point: 28 for around 6 to 7 years, 30 for 8 to 9, 32 for 10 to 11, 34 for 12 to 13, 36 for 14 to 15 and 38 for around 16. Age is only a starting point though — the surest check takes two minutes: lay a trouser that already fits flat and measure from the top of the waistband straight down to the hem.
